When buying tires for your tractor, you are faced with an array of brand names, sizes and types. For the inexperienced farmer this can sometimes be a daunting experience. He has to make a choice while not being quite sure why he should choose a particular tire over another one.

The fact of the matter is that tires differ for a reason. The first difference you will notice is the tread. Some have a rough looking pattern with large blocks. These are normally meant for rugged terrain. The pattern is to provide extra grip on slippery or uneven ground.

Other tires will have a smooth pattern with smaller blocks. These type of tire is normally meant to be used where the terrain is level and smooth, such as for a lawn tractor. They don't need superior grip and the tires won't damage your lawn either.

Some tires are wider than others. Narrow tires are more suitable for hard, smooth terrain. A wider tire is meant for situations where you have soft sand, for example, or muddy terrain. In this case a narrow tire will cause the tractor to get stuck easily. Wider tires will also cause less damage to roads and lawns.
